A pneumatic cylinder, commonly known as an air cylinder, is a fundamental executive component widely used in modern mechanical and automated equipment. It serves as a specialized device that converts compressed air energy into linear mechanical motion. Featuring a simple structure, fast response, low operation cost, and excellent environmental adaptability, air cylinders have become core power components in industrial automation. Unlike electric and hydraulic driving structures, pneumatic cylinders work stably in dust-proof, high-temperature and high-humidity workshops with low failure rates, supporting repetitive and high-frequency mechanical actions for automated production lines.

The basic structure of a standard air cylinder includes key components such as cylinder barrel, piston, piston rod, sealing rings, end covers and buffer devices. All sealing parts ensure air tightness inside the cavity to prevent air leakage and maintain stable pressure output. The buffer structure effectively reduces vibration and impact during stroke termination, extending the overall service life of the cylinder. With standardized and modular design, cylinders are easy to install, replace and maintain, which greatly reduces equipment operating costs for manufacturing enterprises.

The core driving principle of a cylinder follows Pascal's principle of fluid pressure transmission. It relies on compressed air to generate pressure difference inside the cylinder cavity, pushing the piston to produce linear thrust and tension, so as to drive mechanical structures to complete preset actions. When compressed air enters one side of the cylinder chamber, the air pressure acts evenly on the piston surface, overcoming load resistance and internal friction to push the piston rod forward. Meanwhile, the air on the other side is discharged outward. By switching the air inlet and outlet directions through pneumatic solenoid valves, the piston rod can realize automatic extension and retraction reciprocating motion.

According to different driving modes, cylinders are mainly divided into single-acting cylinders and double-acting cylinders. Single-acting cylinders only use compressed air for one-way propulsion and rely on internal spring force or external load to reset, which are suitable for simple pushing and lifting actions. Double-acting cylinders adopt air pressure drive for both extension and retraction strokes, featuring balanced force output and stable operation, which are widely used in most industrial automatic handling, clamping, stamping and sorting processes.

With the continuous upgrading of industrial manufacturing, various high-precision and special-purpose cylinders have been derived, including rodless cylinders, rotary cylinders, thin-type cylinders and adjustable stroke cylinders, meeting the diversified and customized motion requirements of different automated equipment. At present, the mainstream global industrial cylinder brands cover SMC, FESTO, CKD, Airtac, Parker and KOGANEI, which provide standardized and high-reliability pneumatic components for various industrial scenarios.

Air cylinders are applied in almost all automated production links, including mechanical processing, automatic assembly, packaging and sorting, new energy equipment, electronic manufacturing and logistics handling. Their stable power output and flexible control performance effectively improve production efficiency, realize standardized automatic operation, and reduce manual operation errors and safety risks.
